Rock vs. Sand

8-5-2009

It seems every long lasting structure starts with a foundation. If you are building a home, you must make sure the foundation is solid, because if it’s not, then the house is sure to have problems. Our life must be well grounded. It’s our responsibility to make sure our spiritual foundation is set or everything else will fail.

Matthew 7:24-27 says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

How many times have we been asked/told to do something and didn’t, and later we hear those famous words “I told you so!” It’s extremely important to practice what we read or hear. I’ve had the privilege to speak at various events around the country giving motivational concepts, etc. and I see hundreds and sometimes thousands of people vigorously taking notes on everything they hear. So, I decided to add something to my presentations involving the last step: take action! I believe most people take great notes at the seminars and conventions, but they don’t follow through with action. They put their notes on the shelf when they get home, and a few days later they’ve forgotten everything they heard. Jesus wants us to take action on the truth. To build a house on rock is to carry out the message of Christ, to respond with obedience and discipleship. Those that hear the message of Christ, yet do not respond are living a foolish life. When you live a foolish life your house will crumble!

You’ve heard the good news of our Savior, so let’s respond by spreading the good news to the masses that are in desperate need of a solid foundation. If you need to rebuild your foundation, start now!

Application:
1. Read Matthew 7:24-27
2. Take Action!
